Apparently, New Orleans has a variety of festivals that happen on weekends throughout the year, so it's not unusual to have a festival on the lake in mid-October. On Saturday, October 18th Dave and I took the kids to the Madisonville Wooden Boat Festival on Lake Pontchartrain. Madisonville is one town west of Mandeville (where we live). We met up with Dave's co-worker, Matt, his wife, Angelle and their 2 boys, Ben & Will. Ben just turned 3 this week and Will turned 1 in September, so being that they're close to Joey & Abi's ages, they are making great playmates (in fact we played together in our backyard last week). We all had a great day walking along the lake, looking at the wooden boats on display, eating local cuisine and taking advantage of the festival happenings.
One of the best "happenings" at the festival was the build-a-boat booth. The Madisonville Woodworkers group had a booth with parts for toy boats and children could walk along an "assembly line" of woodworkers, pick out parts for their toy boat, and the woodworkers would build the boat for them. Joey and his new friend, Ben had a great time building and later, sailing their boats. Joey has since taken his boat in the bathtub several times (we found out that Ben has taken his in the bath too!).
Another attraction at the festival was a classic car show. Of course, Joey got a big kick out of the cars and had a great time walking around with Dave trying to name the cars. The General Manager of Dave's office had several of his classic cars, muscle cars and race cars there too.
We had a wonderful day at the festival... enjoying the warm weather, delicious food and good company. We can't wait to take advantage of more of the local culture!
